Operating solar plants in Italy, before they reach the market.
Brownfield.solar sources cash-flowing PV plants directly from Italian owners and matches them to your acquisition criteria. Tell us what you want to buy and we come back with pre-screened opportunities under NDA.
- Plants across all Italian regions
- Single plants and portfolios
- Share deals and asset deals
- NDA before any plant is named
What we source
Buying an operating plant removes development, permitting and construction risk. You acquire a known production history and a revenue stream that starts on day one.
A large share of Italy's installed PV is owned by small SPVs, farmers, industrial companies and first-generation developers who never run a public sale process. That is where we work: we find the owners, check the basics and bring the plants to investors who have told us exactly what they are looking for.
- FER X plants
- Recently built plants with a 20-year two-way contract for difference with the GSE. Stable, largely price-hedged revenue from day one. What to check before buying.
- Plants with other GSE incentives
- Plants supported under earlier auction schemes, renewable energy community tariffs or agrivoltaic support measures, each with its own contract terms.
- Merchant and PPA plants
- Unsubsidised plants selling power on the market or under corporate and utility PPAs, including recently commissioned assets.
- C&I rooftop plants
- Plants on industrial and logistics roofs, often with on-site consumption agreements, frequently bundled into small portfolios.
- Portfolios
- Groups of plants from one or several owners, aggregated to reach an investable ticket size.
- PV with storage potential
- Operating plants with batteries already installed, or with the land and grid capacity for a retrofit.
How it works
A short, predictable process from your first message to closing.
Share your criteria
Size, regions, revenue model, deal structure and ticket. It takes about two minutes and commits you to nothing.
Introductory call
We confirm your mandate, approval process and timing, so we only bring you deals you can actually close.
Matching
We screen plants from our owner network against your criteria and check title, incentives, grid connection and land rights before contacting you.
Teaser under NDA
You receive an anonymised teaser. The plant's identity and full data are released once a confidentiality agreement is signed.
Data room and due diligence
Technical, legal and financial documents, production history and GSE records, organised for your advisors.
Offer and closing
Non-binding offer, exclusivity, confirmatory due diligence, SPA and closing. We coordinate both sides until completion.
Why we don't publish a list of plants
Our pipeline changes every week. New plants come in, others go under exclusivity or are sold, often within days of being offered. A public list would be out of date as soon as it went online, and would show you plants that are no longer available.
Owners also expect discretion: most of them sell without announcing it to their staff, lenders or counterparties.
So we work the other way round. You tell us what you are looking for, and we send you only the plants that match your criteria, while they are still available.
Confidential for both sides.
Owners often sell quietly, to avoid unsettling staff, lenders and counterparties. Investors want to test the market without revealing their strategy.
We never publish plant identities, never circulate data without an NDA, and share your criteria with owners only in anonymised form.
Frequently asked questions
Who are your typical investors?
Infrastructure and energy funds, independent power producers, utilities, family offices and industrial groups looking to own energy assets in Italy. We work on single plants from a few hundred kWp up to multi-plant portfolios.
Can a foreign investor buy a solar plant in Italy?
Yes. Non-Italian investors usually acquire the Italian SPV that owns the plant (a share deal) or set up an Italian vehicle that buys the plant directly (an asset deal). Italian legal, tax and technical advisors are normally involved in due diligence.
What happens to a FER X contract after a sale?
In a share deal the SPV remains the counterparty of the GSE contract, so the incentive continues unchanged. In an asset deal the change of ownership must go through the GSE, which transfers the contract to the new owner. In both cases the term does not change: FER X contracts run for 20 years from the plant's entry into operation.
Will my criteria be shared with sellers?
Only in anonymised form, for example: fund seeking 5 to 20 MWp of operating PV in Southern Italy. Your name is disclosed to a seller only with your consent.
How long does a transaction take?
For a single plant, typically three to six months from signed NDA to closing. Timing depends mostly on the quality of the documentation and on any consents needed from lenders or leasing companies.
How are fees handled?
Fee arrangements are agreed case by case before any teaser is shared, and are always set out in writing.
